But that’s not the only thing that motivates most people to be active. Exercise also makes you feel good. They make active people more energetic during the day, sleep better at night, have clearer memories, and feel more relaxed, positive about themselves and their lives. Studies have shown that regular exercise can have a very positive effect on depression, anxiety and ADHD. They also relieve stress, improve memory, help you sleep better, and improve your overall mood.

Exercise and depression

Research shows that exercise can treat mild to moderate depression just as effectively as antidepressants. Recent analyzes by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that running for 15 minutes a day or walking for an hour reduced the risk of major depression by 26%. In addition to relieving the symptoms of this condition, maintaining an exercise schedule can prevent a relapse. Why is it like that? Exercise promotes all kinds of changes in the brain, including the growth of neurons, a reduction in inflammation, and new activity patterns that make you feel calm. It also releases endorphins, powerful brain chemicals that stimulate and promote wellness. Finally, exercise can also be distracting, giving you some time to break out of the circle of negative thoughts that feed depression.

Exercise and restlessness

Physical activity is a natural and effective anti-anxiety treatment. It relieves tension and stress, adds physical and mental energy and improves mood by releasing endorphins. Focusing on how your feet hit the ground, the rhythm of your breathing, or the feeling of the wind against your skin changes a lot. Adding this element of mindfulness not only improves your physical condition faster, but also breaks the flow of constant worries running through your head.

Under stress, muscles may tense, especially in the face, neck, and shoulders, causing back or neck pain, or painful headaches. You may feel tightness in your chest, rumbling pulses, or muscle spasms. The anxiety and discomfort of these physical symptoms can, in turn, lead to even more stress, creating a vicious circle between the mind and body. Exercise is an effective way to break this cycle. In addition to releasing endorphins in the brain, exercise helps to relax muscles and reduce tension in the body.

Exercise and ADHD

Regular exercise is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce ADHD symptoms and improve concentration, motivation, memory, and mood. Exercise immediately increases the levels of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin in the brain, all of which contribute to focus and attention. In this way, exercise works in a similar way to ADHD medications like Ritalin and Adderall.

Exercise and PTSD and trauma

Evidence suggests that by focusing on your body and its feelings while exercising, you can help your nervous system “peel off” and start recovering from the stress response associated with post-traumatic stress disorder or trauma. Exercises that involve cross-movement and involve both arms and legs – such as walking (especially in the sand), running, swimming, strength training, or dancing – are some of the best choices in this case.
